Somerleyton Hall & Gardens

27 May 2014

stately-homeThis stunning 5,000 acre estate features a classic example of British architecture and is situated in the village of Somerleyton near Lowestoft. It is only a 10 minute drive away from Broadland Sands and offers something to do and see for everybody.

Somerleyton Hall has been owned by the Crossley family (the internationally renowned manufacturers of Crossley Carpets) since 1862 and is open to the public between 1 April – 30 September (Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday only – adding Wednesday’s to the timetable between 16 July – 10 September*) and gives visitors the chance to view one of Britain’s most popular stately homes along with its beautiful gardens.

Start your visit at the house itself which is steeped in history and boasts numerous lavish rooms to include: The Entrance Hall, The Ballroom, The Library and The Dining Room.

Once you have walked around the interior of the hall, the gardens are a delightful experience, with an abundance of beautiful trees, flowers and plants as well as the yew hedge maze, which constantly challenges every visitor to complete it’s 800 yard route to the centre without getting lost or stuck!

The Estate has plenty of activities for all ages – the children will enjoy the adventure playground, Viking fort, pony treks and farmyard as well as the wellie walks and cycle trail!

For the grown ups there are also a wide variety of activities available to include rowing and guided boat trips along Fritton Lake, a nine-hole golf course, horse riding, football and croquet.

If you are looking for something to eat there is the Kitchen Garden Restaurant which offers a choice of hot and cold sandwiches, home made soup with crusty bread, a choice of cakes and beverages to include a Suffolk Cream tea. For something more substantial, The Dukes Head is a great Gastropub offering a wide variety of reasonably priced meals such as fish and chips, steak and chips, Sunday Roast lunch etc.

Bank Holidays and special occasions also seem to feature on the Somerleyton Calendar with free admission offered to all accompanied Dad’s on Fathers Day and the increasingly popular “Jazz on the Lawns” on August Bank Holiday (25th) where live music is provided between 2 – 4.30 pm along with a BBQ*.

For a great way of absorbing some local history whilst enjoying the view, Somerleyton Hall makes a lovely day out.
